Vacationland
When you think about the mottoes and other ‘advertising’ states put on their license plates, there are a few that make you smile:
New Hampshire - Live Free or Die - pretty succinct and determined.
New York: The Empire State - also not messing around with the PR department.
New Mexico - Land of Enchantment - with a background illustration from Arches National Park.
Delaware - The First State - and don’t you forget it!
And, of course, Maine - Vacationland. And, it really is the land of vacations. We have guests who have been coming to Maine since they were babies and 70 is a distant memory for them! Generations of families have vacationed here, gone to summer camp here, attended college here because they came here on vacation.
What about us? My parents said they brought me here as a baby. Hmmm, I can’t quite call that to mind. I did come here when I was around 17 and I remember getting stuck on the Fox Islands off Popham Beach because the tide came in and I wasn’t paying attention!(It’s still one of my favorite places in the world.)
Rock remembers going to Old Orchard Beach with his family. It’s hard to find someone along the East Coast who doesn’t have at least one childhood memory of Maine.
Now it’s your turn! Come to Vacationland. Start a family tradition. Make some memories your kids will tell their kids about as they pile everyone in the car and head out for Maine. (Maybe by then the ‘license plate game’ will have some different slogans to gather.)
