South Freeport’s curiosity from the harbor -
The Casco Castle is definitely an oddity in South Freeport! Originally part of a seaside hotel, with zoo, it is now an empty shell, the former wooden hotel structure burned to the ground in 1914.
How to see the castle -
The best views of this little gem are from a kayak or from one of several boat excursions that leave from the South Freeport harbor on a daily basis in the summer. When the harbor freezes over, not a yearly occurrence, the castle is visible on skis or snowshoes. (The Lily B ferry to Bustins Island and Seacoast Tours are two ways to get out on the water.)
On shore options for viewing the structure are Winslow Park (walk all the way to the end where you can see the harbor) and the end of Wolfe’s Neck Rd (pass the state park, keep going to the Stone Coast building at the end).
History of the castle -
The Freeport Historic Society has an informative page about the castle on their website. And, a long time ago I found this blog about Freeport which you may find interesting - 100’s of old photos and postcards!
We named one of the rooms ‘Casco Bay’ and there are postcards of the Casco Castle, ‘Pound of Tea’ (a tiny island in the harbor), and Main Street in Freeport. (While walking around town, see if you can locate the exact buildings in the postcards!)
We hope you’ll come to Freeport and rusticate at White Cedar Inn! There are a lot of other curiosities around Maine you can visit from here.
